I’m siting in the doctor’s office, she just diagnosed me with acne. I truly didn’t know what to think. It was great to finally get a diagnosis which meant a clear plan to tackle it, but one the other hand there was a long road ahead. I didn’t realise how long at the time.
My saving grace was that I found Caroline Hirons a couple of weeks before my doctors visit. I had gone onto her cheat sheets and read every post to do with acne prior to visiting my doctor and thank f*** I did. (The profanity was needed, trust me!)
My doctor handed me a prescription for acne tablets (lycimor) and a topical cream. She told me not to use ANY oil on my face and only to use Boots own brand sensitive oil free range and Cetaphil. That was all the advice I’d been given. I was to take the acne tablet every day for 6 months and then we would revisit it. I also had to apply the cream every day after washing my face.
Instantly I saw a huge improvement in my skin. I’m talking in the space of 2 days, it was like looking at another person. The cream completely got rid of my pores and ALL the blackheads on my nose, which was a miracle!
At the time of going to the doctors my sebum production was the worst it had ever been, it was out of control. The one place it really affected me was my nose. Imagine you ran a marathon and you had beads of sweat all along the top of your nose (not the tip of your nose!). That’s what my nose was like. I had to wipe it with a tissue every couple of minutes because it was a constant overflow. That’s why I couldn’t believe it when the blackheads disappeared! My sebum production on my nose also regulated.
I was doing everything I was told. The Cetaphil cleanser made my skin tight and it felt like I was washing my face with soap, the cream made my skin peel and flake and I knew that I couldn’t keep this up.
I revisited Carolines blog posts and I’m so glad I did. That woman saved my skin! The oil myth was a HUGE one for me. You CAN use oil on acneic skin, hoorah! Taking the advice on her blog I completely revamped my so-called skin care routine. I headed over to cult beauty and placed a massive order! In the meantime I threw out the Cetaphil and stopped using the cream.
When the order arrived I was over the moon. I got Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm, I bought a backup of Emma Hardie Facecloths, Pixi Glow Tonic, Alpha H Liquid Gold, Ren Ever Calm Cleansing Milk, Mizon Blemish Out Pink Spot and Tata Harper Daily Essentials.
The improvement in my skin slowed slightly but the overall health of my skin improved in leaps and bounds. Now that I was using the right products for my skin it had stopped peeling and it never felt tight. I continued using all of this skin care and staying well away from Cetaphil and the topical cream for the remaining months until my check up.
When I sat back down in my doctor’s office after those 6 months, she couldn’t believe it. She said she had never seen someones skin improve SO quickly. I felt like telling her it was because I ignored all of her advice, but thought better of it.
It was then decided I had to take my acne tablets every day for another 4 months and then reduce it to only taking it 4 days a week. Monday-Thursday. I thought this was great news, it was looking like I was on the right path and on my way to being home free.
Oh how wrong I was!
